Tarzan and Jane were in the jungle.
While Jane asked Tarzan about his life she asked him how he made love. Tarzan wasn’t sure what she meant so she proceeded to explain. Tarzan explained that he used a knot hole in a tree trunk. Jane was shocked by this and said, “You can’t do it like that I will have to show you.” So she takes off all her clothes, lays on the ground, and points to her privates, “Put it in there,” she says. So Tarzan takes off his loincloth and gets closer. And then kicks her as hard as he can in the groin. Jane is rolling around in agony and says, “What did you do that for?”
Tarzan says, “Checking for squirrels.”
This joke uses a scenario involving Tarzan, a character often portrayed as being raised in the jungle with limited knowledge of human customs, and Jane, his more civilized counterpart. The humor attempts to derive from a misunderstanding about sexual intimacy due to Tarzan’s naivety. When Jane tries to educate Tarzan about human sexual practices, Tarzan misunderstands her instructions. His response, “Checking for squirrels,” is based on his experience in the jungle where checking holes before using them for any purpose (like the knot hole in a tree) is a practical precaution against animals like squirrels. The joke plays on Tarzan’s innocence and lack of understanding of human sexuality, leading to a literal and misguided interpretation of Jane’s invitation.
