Doge, an internet meme that became popular in 2013 emerged from the blog of owner Atsuko Sato which she made for her rescue-adopted Shiba Inu dog Kabosu. The owner casually posted several photos of her 5-year-old dog on her blog on February 13, 2010, which she started in June 2009. On October 19, 2010, a Reddit user papajohn56 posted the image on subreddit r/ads with a caption “LMBO LOOK @ THIS FUKKEN DOGE.” Meanwhile, the intentional misspelling of dog as doge for humorous effect first appeared in an episode of the web series Homestar Runner in 2005. This started the trend of using Doge’s photoshopped images with captions depicting its thoughts.

In September 2012, a Tumblr blog shibaconfessions was created which showcased comic sans captioned images on Shiba Inu dogs. Later, Internet users photoshopped the Doge to show several emotions such as worried, judgmental or confused. When the popularity skyrocketed, fans started Dogelore is a series of webcomics about Doge, a dog who is “Wacky and Uncharacteristic,” that have been posted on Reddit’s r/dogelore community. On December 6, 2013, Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that was originally made as a joke was officially launched.
