The First Time meme originates from the 2018 American film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In this Coen brothers’ movie, a young cowboy (the character played by James Franco) says this dialogue to the fellow convicted man on his left while standing on the gallows. Earlier, a failed robbery had already put the cowboy on a death sentence by lawman but an ambush from Comanche warriors along with help from an imposter (who actually was a rustler) saved his life. Unknowing to the identity of the man who saved his life, the cowboy joined him on his drive. Soon, another lawman’s men caught the cowboy and sentenced him to death for cattle raiding. On the gallows, the cowboy saw another man weeping and took a jibe at him by saying, “First Time?” The popular use of First Time meme is to mock someone who has been in a dire state for the first time.
