The Oye champ meme originates from the 2009 Indian film 3 Idiots. In this Bollywood movie, Phunsukh Wangdu (the character played by Aamir Khan) says this dialogue to Mona Sahastrabuddhe (the character played by Mona Singh) and her child when the latter told him that her father Dr Viru Sahastrabuddhe wanted to know if the child was a he or she, since if he is a ‘he’ then it will be an engineer and if ‘she’ then a doctor. Hearing this, Phunsukh Wangdu said, “Oye champ, tu andar hi reh.” The English translation of Oye champ, tu andar hi reh is hey champ, you stay inside. The popular use of the Oye champ tu andar hi reh meme is to mock and shed light on an ongoing problem going in society.
